“HANDS ON” Alpaca Training
Book learning is all well and good but nothing compares to diving in and getting your hands dirty! In this intensive hands on training session we offer a unique opportunity to learn by doing.
Getting into the Alpaca business our biggest fear was what to do when we got the critters on our property! What would we do if something went wrong? Can we hurt them? Shearing? Breeding? Birthing? Health Problems? There were a thousand questions . . . many of which didn’t get answered until we had the animals on our property and got “hands on” experience. The goal of this training session is to help you benefit from our experience and give you the “hands on” confidence and personal experience that will help you to enjoy your alpacas from the minute they leave the truck and enter your pasture.
EVERY session is custom tailored to meet the needs of the participants . . . but here is a sampling of the subjects we can cover during your “Hands On” training . . . the subject matter can be very broad and all encompassing or we can focus on your specific needs.
1) An Afternoon Working With Dr. Hunter on our farm. Help give injections, trim toe nails, assist with pregnancy testing and learn about herd health management. Dr. Hunter is a veterinarian with over 20 years experience working with camelids. He makes regular trips to Peru where he continues his education.
2) Halter Training and Herd Management Work with individual alpacas to learn proper haltering and training techniques. We’ll cover general care, shearing, fiber testing, breeding & neonatal concerns.
3) Marketing Your Alpacas How to sell your alpacas after you get them . . . including web site development.
4) Pasture Management & Facilities The safety and health of your animals depends upon proper nutrition and a safe environment. Join us for barn cleaning and learn how to handle the “valuable” alpaca droppings. What do you actually need for shelter? Simple barn plans and fence lay out suggestions.
5) Tax and Accounting Work on your individual tax issues and learn which software might be best for you.
6) And much more . . . Each seminar is limited to a maximum of 4 participants representing no more than two farms so the sessions will be tailored to the needs and desires of the individual participants
